The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill last week to create new grant programs to support environmental education.
The bill鈥攏amed the 鈥攚ould authorize federal money to given to the states to create plans explaining how their students will learn about environmental issues and to prepare teachers to teach about such issues.
鈥淭his initiative will give children opportunities outside the classroom to learn how to become our next environmental leaders,鈥 Rep. John Sarbanes, D-Md., the bill鈥檚 sponsor, said in a statement.
The House passed the bill, 293-109, on Sept. 19. But it is unlikely to become law this year. Congress is expected to adjourn for the year at the end of this week.
